The Ritual by Adam Nevill was a camping cult themed horror book about four old friends, who after fifteen years decide to take a trip together in Sweden. I believe that this book had a lot of potential.

I feel like it could’ve honestly been 100 pages shorter, it felt like there was just a bit too much anticipation for certain things to happen. Such as Luke leaving the cult’s home. That took so long with many boring parts, although I will admit that Nevill’s ability to develop characters is really great. Each character had their own flaws, families, backgrounds.

It was rather slow-paced, something I don’t typically like to look for in a book, I find if I’m not gripped pretty soon in I find it hard to finish and engage with the rest of the book. While I didn’t have this problem with The Ritual, I did find I had to stop reading sometimes because I just felt rather bored. Some of the writing is just a bit repetitive and some of the characters just made me want to slap them all over. AKA Dom and Phil, absolutely could not stand those two at all.

I enjoyed the mythology in this book, I haven’t read horror before featuring Norse Mythology so it was nice to see. And the book definitely had a lot of creep factor throughout.

I started reading this book as part of a imprompt book club with one of my co-workers.
To be perfectly honest I don't think I could have finished this book if I didn't Watch a preview of the audio book on youtube and then purchase it audible. The first 75% of this book was about 4 men b******* in the woods about how much they hate theirs, wives and themselves. And each other, and then the last 25% of the book.
Was about a death metal band of teens that smell. The book really Want you to know how gross these people are, and one of the characters escaping his captors. The monster shows up its meh at best. The conclusion has you feeling as exhausted as the character at the end. The chapters are wildly inconsistent in length one. Chapter was legitimately only a single page.   The author spends too much time describing things that are not important and not enough time. Giving details on pivotal points of the plot if I did not have someone else to review summary with? I don't think I would have understood the plot of this book in any capacity.
