A chummy King takes you aside and talks at length (and with many asides) about what makes horror good, what makes it work, why we read it (or watch it), and why writers create it. There’s even an updated section in the beginning where he updates his list of good (and bad) stuff. The update discusses mostly movies. I wish it had focussed more on novels and short stories.

There’s even a chapter on the late, great Harlan Ellsion!

A list of Stephen King's favourite horror novels and media, a personal list as a book of the sort you don't get anymore post internet. "Required reading" that I would have devoured as a kid, when I had no access to any kind of wider horror info. I think now though it is more interesting in terms of how it influenced him. I do think you need to know quite a bit about 70s US horror to get the most from this.

I did like the lack of filter. He doesn't hold back in telling you what he really thinks of a lot of classic works, and if you don't agree, well who are you to disagree with Stephen King on horror?
