A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: The Poetry of Mister Rogers by Fred Rogers

Mr. Rogers was such an important part of my childhood, bringing me joy every time he took off his shoes, hung up his jacket, and hummed to the soothing theme song. It's strange to think back on how therapeutic his little episodes on television were, and how they affected so many people during that very lucky period of time. Receiving this book as a Christmas present was absolutely lovely and fitting; but it left me wanting to learn more about this great, caring man. It's essentially a book of his inspiring quotes, while I wish that in his time, he could have shared even more.

I read this one aloud over a couple of weeks with my 4 year old and she was captivated. She loved the poems and would request them at all times of the day, not just before bed. She particularly loved when we made up melodies to some of the poems that we couldn't find the accompanying songs for. Personally, I felt the included pieces tended to work better in their original form as songs than they do as poems and there were a decent number of poems that were just okay. Still, it made for quality family time and lots of good discussions, which was awesome.

I may not be the desired audience for this book, but I loved it! It's a great encouragement for being you and having fun whether you are young or old, and I definitely sent a couple of these poems to others to hopefully brighten their days too.
"If you've got an hour
Now's the time to share it.
If you've got a flower, wear it.
Today is just the day"

There's not a bad thing that can be said about this! It's so heartwarming to read Mr. Rogers' own words and you can feel how much he really cared about children, and people in general. The illustrations are charming and beautifully done!

If you work with children in any capacity this book will be extremely helpful in understanding why children seek certain behaviors and what’s the best way to respond. I loved that Fred Rogers passed on some of his life-learnings from working with children over the years. I love to think that his legacy in TV still lives on with his Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, all of his love and care for children has been well preserved by his production company.
