Absolutely fantastic! Excellent character development and obviously well-researched. Looking at the forgotten women who served as nurses in Vietnam, the story covers many aspects: friendships and bonds formed during war, mass casualties on both sides including civilians, effects of napalm including long-term, death of loved ones, addiction, POW's, returning home, protests, PTSD, and veteran suicide. It's all very emotional, but the reader is immediately drawn into the story and invested in the characters.

This book swept me along and painted a harrowing picture of field medicine in the Vietnam War and the aftermath for one nurse. I laughed, I cried, I’m taking off one star because the soap-operatic elements of the story rubbed me the wrong way. But overall, I’m very glad I read it

100000000/5 stars. This is my new favorite book ever. Kristin Hannah is a wizard. I have thought about this book everyday since reading it.
I was still hoping Ry would turn it around
but I am so happy with how Frankie's story ended. I cried so many times through this whole book. SO MUCH!

A gut-wrenching, often infuriating, account of women vets in the Vietnam War and following their return home. Challenging and hard to read at times, simply because of the content, but this is Kristin Hannah at her best. No one writes female friendships and chosen family like her. I loved reading about how the women supported each other when no one else, particularly the US government, did. It was also incredible to immerse myself in a period of time I didn’t know much about before.

My only qualm is the focus on Frankie’s (the protagonist of the story) many, many love interests. I recognize that this is a part of life, but I would have been much more interested to read the details of Barb’s activism than Frankie’s pining away for a yet another narcissist. However, this book has opened my eyes to these stories, and I’m looking forward to reading some other historical accounts of female Vietnam vets.
