Definitely a five star read. I love Kristin Hannah's writing. This is my first read about the Vietnam war, and definitely my first read about the women that served in Vietnam. The emotions and relationships are real! If you love/like historical fiction, this one is for you!

I really enjoyed this and read most of it in one day! I learned a lot about the experience of women during the Vietnam War era. I do wish that it was a little more concise though- it was just one bad thing after another happening to the main character Frankie and like her last book (The Four Winds)n I was ready for it to be over by the end.

I was first introduced to Hannah via 'The Four Winds' which was stunning. It helped that I have an interest in that time period. This one is also an interesting time period (though, not necessarily Vietnam), but I have a slight concern with Hannah's writing. Certainly this had some visceral moments that might trigger persons who experienced the war first hand, so I don't necessarily recommend it for that population. But, my bigger concern, and it may take some more of her novels to form a complete picture, is that you sort of know what to expect...which might be comforting to some, but personally, I don't always enjoy figuring out what's happening mid-book and finding that it's similar to a previous book. I refer to this as the Dan Brown conundrum, whose books I like, but I had to stop reading because they're all basically the same book. This is not to say that 'The Four Winds' and 'The Women' are the same, except that when you meet the main character and get a feel for how their story is playing out, you can sort of see what's coming. And, some people may enjoy that, but I guess I sort of prefer a surprise. Regardless of your feeling on this aspect of writing, this is an incredible book that deals with a very important part of history that sometimes can feel 'forgotten.'
