A beautifully written book that’s hard to rate due to the morally reprehensible subject matter and overtly racist characterizations of Latinx and Indigenous folks. If you can think of it as a window into white folks thought process re: manifest destiny, it is a meditative, thought-provoking, and sensitive book. I would imagine that, at the time this book was originally published, Willa and her two main characters were fairly progressive in their approach to the topic? I definitely read the intention of the book as encouragement for the audience to think more critically about the dominant narratives, “victories,” heroes, etc. of westward expansion. If viewed as a product of its time, I think it’s a great book, but not necessarily one I would recommend to anyone else.
