great set of characters, novel plot and entertaining as always. I much enjoyed my time with this second book. I really loved all the parallels there are with the current political landscape and the social commentary on all our still ongoing problems like racism, the patriarchy, feminism, capitalism and even climate change. Great stuff, as I've come to expect from Tchaikovsky.

What does it mean to be alive, conscious, intelligent, committed, loyal, complacent, independent? How much agency do you want, need, deserve? What is a person?

This is not a book about what is right or wrong, but rather how one develops their own moral compass and how it's subject to change.

Following in the wake of the world coming to grips with the reveal of artificially created life in the form of genetically engineered Bioforms, we find several characters from the previous novel back in the dreaded spotlight of legislation.

New political forces are recycling old fear mongering with different names and acting with all the immunity afforded by private equity and charisma to fund terrifying new ventures.

Bioforms are under threat of endentured servitude, while a group of willing and misled participants undergo body alteration surgeries to work on building a new city on Mars. Something extra is added and left vacant I each of them, to be used at a later time. Jimmy Marten finds out sooner than most when he suddenly finds his head has another voice.

Excellent follow on from Dogs of War, perhaps a little more contemplative over moral issues of control and slavery but plenty of action and occasional sly humour.

A typical Tchaikovsky sequel which continues the story in a really natural way but uses it to explore new themes and ideas. I particularly liked the deeper exploration of civil rights.
