This is so fucking insane but it’s so camp at the same time. If this ever gets a movie (I highly doubt it will but a girl can wish 😔) it will 100% become a queer classic in my eyes (even if it’s got zero gay people).

A really cool first book in a trilogy reimagining a childhood classic. This one kept me guessing right until the very end. All of the moving players and never knowing who to trust leaves you feeling as disoriented as Amy is throughout the book. The twist at the very end makes you want to find the next book as soon as you can.

This has been on my TBR list for maybe a month now. I just... wow. I couldn't wait to get this, and I really liked the plot idea. Dorothy gone evil, sounded cool! Then I read it. First, I was surprised at how bulky the book was. I expected it to be big, but woah, it was big. Like... A Book Thief Big. Like... Harry Potter #4 Big! Can I just say how much I love Amy, next? Amy was really spunky, and I think we can all understand how frustrated she is. I love how the author didn't make her so she's like, "Oh, let's just go kill her, I'm totally on board!" Because seriously, who's like that?! And all the plot twists and wondering who's good or evil is quite exciting! Now, I really just want to say this, so here it is: I saw reviews and people said it was slow. Maybe they're was a few parts, like when she was in the jail, but for most of it, I found it exciting. Maybe I"m weird, but I'm quite sure they're the weird ones! :P Now, Dorothy. Just.... Dorothy... I don't know. Anyway, Dorothy really grew up! Like, when did her red slippers become stilettos?! Anyway, I do think she was a little too gaudy, and her attitude. Oh my. She turned into one of the girls from Mean Girls! Anyway, she's pretty evil, and she kills a lot of people. It scares me how much she's changed, and Glinda too! I love the characters, and just how Oz had changed! Now, one big problem I have with the books is simple: The back cover. The back cover explains it in a way that she's killing the scarecrow, tin woodman, lion, and Dorothy in this book. But she doesn't. This back cover should be on the second book, not the first. Anyway, in the end I was all like YAY DOROTHY'S DEAD.... And then... Oh wait, she's not. I can't wait to get to the next book, and see how Danielle improves our story of Amy Gumm.

I honestly disliked the book, but I really dislike the author as well.
Her actions here really turned me away from reading anything else by her.

I’ve had this book for the longest time and seeing Wicked inspired me to finally read this. Dorothy Must Die was released when fairytale reimaginings and dystopian ya novels dominated the book scene. Right from the start, you could tell it was a product of that era. The turn of events and heroine-turned-villainess storyline (esp. in the context of a famous story) drew me in, but I was quickly turned off by the characters and illogical plot points. First, Amy was radiating too much “I’m not like other girls but I’m not special yet I’m somehow the chosen one.”  It felt like the entire book was just Amy feeling insecure about herself and “The Order” trying to tell her she’s special despite providing no support for her. And while we’re at it, “The Order” is such a horrible resistance group. They push Amy into executing their “big plans” without communicating anything with her and then blame her when she understandably messes up. Secondly, there is a lot more gore than expected. I didn’t think there would be grotesque and graphic explanations of people being ripped apart or melted to death. Lastly, there is no such thing as subtlety in this book. Everything is spelled out for you and it felt very much like a “brain-off” reading experience.

Now, I could’ve rated this book lower but I kept it at 2.75 because there were some things I enjoyed. For one, I appreciated that the pacing was not rushed, which is often the case for books with a lot of action. Another thing is that it made me feel nostalgia for the days when I used to enjoy books like this. It gave me a little escape from current adult life (despite how frustrating the characters could be at times). However, after reading this, I think I will stay away from dystopian and fantasy ya novels for a bit.

This book had so much potential! The premise is interesting and I was excited to start this book. However, I was let down very quickly. First of all, I was sorely disappointed by the flow of the story (it is so choppy) and secondly I was put off by the constant use of foul language (which surprised me as this is SUPPOSED to be a YA novel). The writing is sloppy and not what I expected. Needless to say, I will NOT be reading any of the sequels.
