Informative and well-written. A personal experience of the injustices and racism built into the infrastructure of medicine and its education and training.

This memoir highlights the systemic racism in American healthcare. It is a raw unfiltered look into healthcare in America and how we arrived where we are today.

It is an unwashed and personal narrative/experience which still continues to plight black people today.

Narrated by the author, she told her story, her mother’s and her sister’s and how they navigated life as black women in medicine.

Her voice was soothing and made me vested in the book from start to finish. There was no sugarcoating anything.

Racism in American healthcare is a tale as old as time. The author highlighted instances where black people were used for medical experiments by white doctors without anaesthetic and consent.
finish.

If you want a new perspective to the issue of race and medicine then you should read this.

Loved the memoir aspect of this and hearing her personal experiences was very moving. The research did feel very surface level with a fair amount of “we know this” blanket statements, so I would have loved a deeper dive. I am taking this as a nudge to do more research on my own!

Especially with the current dismantling of DEI initiatives across the country, it’s gut wrenching to know how broken and skewed the healthcare industry is. In particular, the still-declining maternal death rate for black birthing persons, her own appendicitis experience, and the stories of medical experiments on enslaved children made me sick to my stomach

This should be required reading for everyone. It is incredibly informative and enlightening and also horrifying.
