If you're a fan of fantasy novels with a strong sense of atmosphere and a richly detailed world, then "A Winter's Promise" is definitely worth checking out. It is a stunning debut novel that will transport you to a world of wonder and magic. This French fantasy novel, translated by John Chalmers, is the first installment in the "The Mirror Visitor" series, which promises to be a thrilling and enchanting ride. This book is a perfect blend of magic, mystery, and adventure, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure. Dabos' writing is nothing short of magical. Her use of language is evocative and lyrical, conjuring up vivid images of a world that is both familiar and strange. The characters are well-developed and complex, with Ophelia being a particularly compelling protagonist. Her struggles to navigate her own identity and her sense of purpose are relatable and engaging.
One of the standout aspects of this book is its exploration of themes such as memory, identity, and the power of storytelling. Dabos masterfully weaves these themes throughout the narrative, creating a rich and immersive world that draws you in from the very beginning.
The pacing of the book is well-balanced, with moments of high tension and suspense juxtaposed with more introspective and contemplative scenes. The plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, keeping you on the edge of your seat as you try to unravel the mysteries of Serenissima.

An interesting fantasy book with some great ideas and brilliant world-building however sometimes the plot moved a bit slower than I would have liked and it seemed to get caught up in small details. It was enjoyable to read though and I think anyone who loves fantasy should give it a go.

This YA fantasy was okay but not good enough to want to pursue the series.
