Dreamcatcher

Stephen King

Of course, I managed to pick up the one book that references nearly all my favourite media by accident. This is my first Stephen King, and I really liked it. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of writing, but it was pretty fast-paced and interlinked nicely. A tad longer than it needed to in some places, but I thoroughly enjoyed the themes and prevailing friendship. I'm excited to read more!

Dreamcatcher is a gripping story told from different viewpoints, shifting between past and present. It explores how childhood and friendship shape the characters’ lives.

The mix of supernatural horror and real emotions makes it more than just an alien story. Even though alien horror isn’t my thing, the strong characters and suspense kept me hooked.

On re-read, yes it’s too long. Make that way too long. But ultimately cathartic in the end. SSDD.

Ah, Stephen King. What can be said about you? I read your novels and just like I felt reading them, I experienced a variety of emotions during Dreamcatcher as well.

I felt excited at the mystery of the unknown. I felt emotions stirring as I watched the lives of the main characters unfold and end, in some cases. I felt horror as should be expected right when someone reads Stephen King on a book's cover. I felt angry at the character I should have felt rage towards. I felt pity, love and even empathy. At times, I felt a little bored as well, something that probably stems from your tendence to write indulgently just a tad too much.

But as I look back, I realise I would rather have all of the bad and the good as it is in the book, rather than not. Such a strange feeling, that after finishing a story you realise that all those parts you felt unnecessary somehow end up adding to the story in ways you understand only once the story ends. The hallmark of a great writer, if nothing else.

I've always been a fan and after reading this, I can only say that very few can write as good as you and nobody can do with words what you can. A flawed but ultimately moving and compelling story, Dreamcatcher has everything you expect from a King novel, and just that little more that makes it stand out. What a ride, honestly, what a ride. Four stars.

Not nearly as bad as people say it is. It actually had a lot of ideas I really enjoyed and some very likable characters. Not to mention a pretty good villain. However, things definitely go off the rails a bit In the second half of the book. Despite that I still enjoyed the ending.

3.5/5.0 starts.

Perfectly average King in my opinion.

2.5 stars. I thought the first 300 pages were very strong, then the next 200ish pages were pretty much all of the characters driving which got old really fast. toward the end I was feeling so impatient for the book to end because you know Mr. Gray is going to be stopped by our heroes but it was taking so long to get there. and then how they did get there just felt a bit lackluster? Idk. unfortunately not my favorite book by King but that’s also kind of to be expected considering I kept putting the book down for literally over a year.
