I wavered between giving this book four or five stars. In the end, I settled on four because, no matter how much I enjoyed reading it, there were some technical issues that pulled me out of the story.

For one, a very large world was created inside the book with many different concepts. A few concepts didn’t really to seem to have a place in the story or drew away from it in some way, such as the “Seasons” characters and storyline

For another, there were times when the writing seemed a little cliché or heavy-handed. When the characters weren’t fleshed out enough to make their actions seem realistic enough.

And that was it. That was the end of all complaints that I had with this book. It was fantastic. It was funnier than I would like to admit. If there were moments when it was cheesy, it was cheesy in the best possible way. It picked at the superhero genre’s most obvious and not so obvious flaws, but it also celebrated the instances where the superhero genre excels. It takes down the superhero’s hero and replaces it with a down-to-earth human who just coincidentally has loads.

It was a satire at its finest.

This book is a great starting place for Velveteen! It doesn't get into the metaplot and wider world as much as the latter two books, though, so I didn't enjoy it as much as those.

I really enjoyed this - Velveteen is compelling, and the worldbuilding is fascinating. (It was especially interesting to read this right after watching the new X-Men movie - the different ways in which life can suck for teenaged superheroes!) Definitely looking forward to the sequel, but definitely not willing to buy into some of Amazon's BS pricing stuff right now.

Fun superhero stories. The format feels like a set of short stories collected into a book more than a novel - there's not a strong continuous story line.

Still, engaging characters, and good work building, and manages to do superheroes "realistically" without going into grimdark or parody, which is hard to do.

Will definitely read more of these.

Wow! This was really good! I don;t mean to sound surprised, given that I love Seanan McGuire's October Daye series. It just the title seemed, well, a little fluffy. Do NOT be fooled. This is a great series of vignettes that make for one SUPER story!

Audible is good

I would not have said so based on the stories in this collection alone, although I loved them (as you can see by the rating) -- but, having finished the rest of the stories on the author's blog, I think this might be my favorite of her fictional universes. To put that in perspective: I'm the sort of person who presses copies of Feed onto unsuspecting strangers.

I fucking LOVE Velveteen and her friends.

The current arc is obviously done, but I hope the loose threads get picked up at some point in the future.

Superheroes. Coming of age. Evil marketing people. Army of kick butt bunnies and toy soldiers.

Read this, damn it!
