This is a great commentary on colonialism, white supremacy, and internalized racism.

Rescued from a cholera plague in China, orphaned "Robin" is taken to England by a mysterious benefactor and enrolled in Babel - the esteemed translation institute at Oxford University responsible for creating and maintaining the magical silver bars that underlay all societal progress. What follows is a story of found family, injustice and prejudice, violent revolution, and the necessity of violence.

What a book. An exhausting read with dense and heavy content that picks apart and lays bare the prejudice and injustice of white colonialism and the greed for power and control.

Probably the most impactful book I've ever read besides Jemisin and Butler.

Manages to capture the devastating scope of colonial genocide while also portraying the courage and brilliance of those around the world struggling to survive and triumph over it.

All I can say right now while I process everything this book made me feel  is that I'm surprised no one in the US has tried to get this book banned yet.
I don't think I've considered a book this much of a must-read in at least a decade. I'll elaborate further once I get my thoughts and emotions in order, but right now, I struggle to think of a more relevant and poignant fiction book to read in the current state of the world. Just...wow. Please read Babel.

the first half was incredibly slow paced and at times a drag to get through. If it wasn't for some long train rides with nothing better to do, I would've taken much longer to finish. The last quarter or so was really exciting though! I even got emotional and started crying near the end.
