I would actually pay money to be Rebecca’s editor. I loved so many aspects of this, but, GOD, did it drag. I understand, she views every work as her magnum opus. I, however, do not care. I love the historical fantasy/magical realism of it all. There were times I didn’t know what was fiction and what was fact. I enjoyed the themes of colonialism, racism, and morality. I just don’t think the author has a good understanding of which parts of her books are interesting.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

Had to stop when the murder happened and all of the characters’ reactions felt disconnected and forced and made me hate all the characters I was supposed to love, and made me actually like (or at least think she made sense) the character I was supposed to hate. The whole book felt very ham-fisted with its point and wasn’t saying anything new at the half way point or really developing the characters in any way (though it did try) and I just stopped caring about the super predictable, train-track ending it was going to have. Really disappointed with this book.

I wanted to like this book & I think the concept is cool, what a powerful reimagining of colonial England. I like that there is so much agency and priority given to Robin, Ramy, and Victoire and just to commmunities of color.

However, what made this hard to read is how closely Kuang follows her character to the point where you KNOW how everyone feels and thinks ALL THE TIME. A little of distance would be great. Maybe just not the writing style for me.
