DID NOT FINISH: 50%

Had to stop when the murder happened and all of the characters’ reactions felt disconnected and forced and made me hate all the characters I was supposed to love, and made me actually like (or at least think she made sense) the character I was supposed to hate. The whole book felt very ham-fisted with its point and wasn’t saying anything new at the half way point or really developing the characters in any way (though it did try) and I just stopped caring about the super predictable, train-track ending it was going to have. Really disappointed with this book.

I wanted to like this book & I think the concept is cool, what a powerful reimagining of colonial England. I like that there is so much agency and priority given to Robin, Ramy, and Victoire and just to commmunities of color.

However, what made this hard to read is how closely Kuang follows her character to the point where you KNOW how everyone feels and thinks ALL THE TIME. A little of distance would be great. Maybe just not the writing style for me.

Started off strong but I just got bored and couldn't fully get into the characters or story after part 1.

"They're not your motherlands," said Letty. "They don't have to be."

This book was fabulous. The first half is interesting and whimsical following a student and his friends. But it turns into this fight for pride, reckoning, and sacrifice. The last couple chapters were quite beautiful.

I'm giving it four stars because I felt a loss of interest through the middle and some of the writing was a bit unnecessary. But I truly enjoyed it.
