i didn’t really wanna give this book 5 stars, teetering on 4.5 because it was almost like an immigrant retelling of the poppy war trilogy. but i sobbed so suddenly and vehemently i was shocked at myself by the end. i still think about this book whenever i feel the urge to discuss language and translation to people especially when it comes to Bible translations but that’s just another result.

acabei de ler o livro então só vou jogar tudo o que eu estou pensando/sentindo. pqp, que livro, eu particularmente amei. sinto que esse livro foi feito pra me agradar: protagonista passa por uma série de questões relacionadas ao racismo contra amarelos que me fizeram me identificar muito. a autora consegue unir elementos fantasiosos com uma crítica ferrenha ao colonialismo, a exploração e a branquitude. diria até que tem como traçar um paralelo interessante com o capitalismo tardio. enfim, diria que esse livro tem um espaço especial no meu coração

I think this is the book that will finally get me out of my reading slump, reading slump that which has been there for several years. I fell in love again with the universe of books. The missing star is due to those parts I didn’t really understand lol, like the long ass conversations about language and translation, that made me lose focus on the story.
Overall, I really enjoyed the main characters, their relationships and the storyline. Ngl I felt smart reading this book and it was simply just not a simple book about futile things, it was way more than a fiction.
Upon all of this, Robin and Ramy have my heart <3
