This was the most beautifully written heartache. R. F. Kuang’s writing is gorgeous—layered and thoughtful—but never pretentious. Instead of leaving you lost, it makes you feel like you’re in on the brilliance.

As a teacher (of kindy, mind you—but still!) the exploration of etymology and morphology was absolutely fascinating. I learned so much, and I know I’ll be thinking about this book forever.

It's a really good book. Although set in a fictional reality, it touches on themes that are difficult to express properly and explain about sensitive topics in a humane and informed manner, all while making it a pleasant read. I loved it. The story is so interesting and the characters are fleshed out. You feel like you watched them grow. A TBR book

It's gonna take me a little while to fully express how much this book means to me! Phenomenal!!!!

Summary:
Robin gets plucked from Canton by Professor Richard Lovell to study in England to become a translator for the British Empire. But what happens when Robin begins to question the cost of his complacency?

My thoughts:
Just WOW! I have never, and I really mean never, felt so many raw emotions while reading a book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me want to through the book across the room. I truly loved this so much. I get why people call her books masterpieces now, and I cannot wait to sink into her other works.
I highly recommend.

A stunning story of what it means to struggle against a system you benefit from, and stories we tell ourselves. Also a beautiful portrayal of the intricacies of language. ♡

Did I finish this book or did it finish me?

i really liked this book, i thought the story and magic system were super creative, characters were very lovable, and i really liked the story too. i just think the writing had a bit too many flourishes and it could have been shorter
