This is the best novel Ariel Lawhon has written to date.  In her Author's Note, Lawhon notes that this novel is inspired by historical events, rather than based on them and this freed her imagination to write a better book.  She has taken the story of Martha Ballard, a midwife who lived during the Revolutionary War period in Maine from her diaries.  An icy cold winter envelopes her small town along with an underlying unease.  Through it all, Martha delivers babies, cares for women and manages her own family. Violent crime brushes up against her her family and friends and she finds herself in the middle of court cases due to her livelihood.  Martha Ballard was a smart strong woman with a smart strong supportive husband who became a role model not only for those who knew her, but for those who came after her.  This only took me so long to read because it was January and cold and I was reluctant to be done with Martha Ballard.
