i bought this specifically for aviva briefel & sianne ngai's essay on candyman, but was pleasantly surprised by the breadth of work featured. there's some early criticism that reads as particularly quaint, in a very good way, and a decent amount of theory to balance out the fluffier stuff. a good starter book!
