WOW. WHAT A BOOK! It feels overwhelming to think about what we can do (or if we can do anything) to stop plummeting towards self-destruction, but you gotta start somewhere. I keep thinking about the place we have given ourselves in the world and the more I think about it, the crazier it is that we think humans are the ultimate. But as we have chosen to live outside of nature's rules (instead of behaving like all other animals and taking just what we need and no more from the world), we may very well become the ultimate of evolution as we destroy the planet we're living on. I like the idea that Ishmael talks about of evolution intending to create more self-aware and intelligent beings and wonder what the world would look like if we hadn't manipulated it to the point of wiping out so many species. Ishmael calls us to action to slow down, turn around, and show the world that we can go back to being in harmony with the rest of the world and there is room for other creatures to evolve into self-aware, intelligent creatures. Trying to figure out my part in this journey and making an attempt to make some changes.

I was not as impressed and I thought I would be. Interesting, but sounds like a lot of criticism and not enough solutions.
this book actually spent several months living in my underwear drawer which was the place that i kept books that were too scary or disturbing to finish, so that hopefully at a later date in time i could finish them without having to think about them right now.
i read this book the summer before sixth grade and looking back, it was a little over my head.
i think the part that made me hide it was the idea of people starving and the problem of when we give them hand-outs of food and aid, that it just adds to the problem as they will then have more children, creating more hunger and poverty...
i think i may need to reread this one to fully appreciate what my twelve year old mind could not.
