Every now and then one may want a bit of exciting utopian philosophical speculation. I must admit, I read the whole thing, at various points with great interest. But then I remembered that the concerns of the environmental movement are too severe and pressing for escapism or a limited dogma of private virtue. I see the romance of primitivism, I really do. But we are running out of time, and we have to get better at speaking a language the world can hear.
Read this with my book club. Our consensus was that it was one of the those books, like Ayn Rand's polemic "novels", that might prove inspiring....when one is a teenager. Otherwise, just groaningly bad.

I have definitely stepped out of my reading comfort zone by reading this book, which turned out to be great. This is a profound philosophical book that helps you gain a new perspective about the world. I highly recommend it.
Nice sentiment and narrative, but fails to incorporate the realities of actual biology, history, anthropology, or archaeology in service of motivated reasoning. Significant over generalizations.

Ishmael is a philosophical journey that gave me a lot to think about. It sheds a new light on human history, our civilisation and what is to become of us if we make the right choices. An absolute must-read!
