Plain and deep! Good for one-sitting read under a blanket in winter.
It reminded me a little bit of Jane Eyre!

This book was recommended to me on the basis of being a "prequel" to Bronte's Jane Eyre to be more interested in older literature. It is a short and easy read with the prose often switching to dialect, but the change isn't as dramatic as other books I've read in the past. I loved the gothic narrative that handles the two main characters whose lives were upended because of the political climate during the time it is set in and circumstances that were inevitable. One this to note when reading is that the characters are a product of the time that is the novel's setting, so there are going to be many instances where both of them say and think questionable things regarding race relations and the treatment of women and men in multiple circumstance.
I wouldn't consider any character, except for Christophine, being loveable; though I do find them sympathetic to a certain extent. At certain scenes I was rooting for them when progress is being made to further the story telling, while in others I found the MMC to be a unbearable human being when reading from his perspective. At this I would also say that character development in this novel is not them progressing into better people and I found that a nice change compared to what I read in the past.

It does deal with themes of grief, depression, suicide and its ideation, and marital abuse.

This book is short but I feel like it’s perfect length since it really is so dark and sad. I came to really love the meandering and emotionally driven writing style and found the third/final part of the book to be really moving in particular.
