Part gum-shoe detective novel, part blade runner. I haven't read much mystery/detective stuff over the years... I  feel like like the whole retro detective thing can drag on and on (which this did in a few sections). But I have read a fair amount of sci-fi over the years so it was kind of fun to mix those up and add some futuristic twists to what would be pretty average noir. I'll note that I was confused on occasion, and at times the narrative plodded, but overall the coupling of genres worked. I found myself thinking of the story when I wasn't reading, writing which surprised me. I consider that a good thing and it makes up for the occasional plodding and confusion.  I would read more stories set in this same world, at least now that I know what's going on. Unfortunately I don't think this is an author who's into series, so that's probably not going to happen. Oh well.

The idea behind this book is great, the concept is really there, but the execution is so painful. I did finish it, but I don’t think it was a good use of my time.

The writing style is crazy, and I’m not sure why: maybe the book just lacked editing? The author almost never indicates who is talking, which makes it difficult to follow. I listened to the audiobook and still struggled, despite the narrator doing voices for a few characters. At one point, the narrator even gets the characters who are speaking to each other’s voices the wrong way round because there’s no indication who said what.

The main character is intensely dislikable. You can tell the author thinks he’s the coolest man alive, but he’s just a bit of a dick with unbelievable dialogue: nobody talks in the way that they are written in this book.

As a final writing style complaint; you know in a film where the fight scene goes on a bit too long? In this book they are excessively long, excessively detailed and add nothing to the plot. It feels like they were purely added to boost the word count.

As it’s a detective novel I guess I should say something about the ending and big reveal: the novel ends with all the energy of a deflating balloon, even though the author definitely thought he was ending it with a bang.

Good noir, good detective story, interesting alternate timeline. Not only are the oligarchs obscenely Rich and powerful, gene therapy gives then superhuman bodies and long life. I don’t read mysteries to solve, this one had a good twist at the end.

I'm only now realizing how much "Noir+something scifi" is an actual genre. I've read a few examples and they are quite fun.
