This was exactly the book my reading life needed right now. I zoomed through it on the edge of my seat. I'm so very curious about three publishing timeframe that allowed him to set this in Dec. 2019-March 2020 and include the mystery virus. This is not one of Connelly's best, though. The voice or the writing didn't feel as natural or smooth as usual. That might be due to late edits, or maybe it's just been awhile since I've read Mickey Haller. Well worth the read, though.

So I’m normally a 5-star Connelly reviewer, but not this time. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. But a few things didn’t sit right with me. First, they knew the real culprit after a fairly quick review of his files. Too easy. And then so many of the legal/trial tactics bothered me. I’m a trial lawyer, and have been for the last 15 years. 99% of that couldn’t, and wouldn’t happen. There were major ethical violations—lying to a witness about your relation to a case? Nope. Sending your investigator out to the garage to spy on jurors? Lord, no. The way the judge spoke? Nope. The way the lawyers spoke to each other and the judge? Nah. The way speaking objections were constant in front of the jury? Absolutely not. And so on. And the end? That’s it? They cut a deal? Boo.

But, I did enjoy the book, and it kept me invested. Just expect more of 5 stars from Master Connelly and this wasn’t it.

Mickey Haller has to defend himself from inside jail against the allegation of murdering a client and stuffing them into the boot of his towncar.

He assembles a super avengers defense team of everyone who's ever dropped by the Lincoln lawyer/Bosch universe, including The Fifth Witness. Usual technical details and description of jail and legal tactics and it all works out in the end due to
Spoilersome federal assistance.

“In the law of innocence, for every man not guilty of a crime, there is a man out there who is. And to prove true innocence, the guilty man must be found and exposed to the world.”

After watching and enjoying both of the Netflix series focusing on The Lincoln Lawyer. I thought it was the perfect time to read one of the books. Familiarising myself with the main character Mickey Haller and his entourage through the series. I didn’t mind starting with the sixth book in the LL series.

Certainly not a carbon copy of the show, with various changes due to legal or entertainment purposes. It didn’t take me long to acclimatise to the characters I already knew through the show. Already having an image and voice in my head was quite a refreshing change and one I enjoyed.

The story itself was really intriguing, however, like the TV show it is a little predictable with the misdirection being quite easy to spot. Despite this it kept me hooked and engaged to read on to find out what happened.
We essentially read a courtroom drama play out in front of us for the majority of the book. This was interesting to see play out with all the tricks of the trade on display. While it was enjoyable it did become a little drawn out towards the end.

Now onto the ending, while it was fine, I couldn’t help but feel a little letdown and disappointed. With the grand build-up centring on the big case, the finale just felt a little flat. However, this could also be down to the book being a series and we will have furtherance to the story in the next addition.

Overall a solid and enjoyable courtroom drama that was easy to both read and follow while ticking many of the boxes I look for in a thriller/crime book.
