Clara Bronson and her son come to Copperhead to get away from life.
And also because she has a job there.
She's the new Sheriff to this backwater mining town in a part of space people would rather forget.
She's also not necessarily wanted there--her first in command wanted the job for himself and some of the people on the planet would rather not answer to a woman.
Copperhead vol 1 is a great introduction to what promises to be a space western series you won't or can't soon forget.
After reading this, I need to read the second one, for sure!

I went into this not knowing anything about it and was pleasantly surprised. It's the story of the arrival of a new sheriff in town, but it's taken to an alien planet. Lots of different aliens featured. It has a somewhat predictable storyline. Still it was an entertaining read because of some of the original twists. to a well-known Western trope. I read this for the 2016 Hugo nominations.

Bumping this from 2 stars to 3 solely because of the emails between the creators while fleshing out their ideas (included in the collected edition). They've got all the right ideas, just really lackluster execution in these first issues.
It's a mash-up of COPS and Lassie, in Space. The backwoods/hick/alien family having a domestic dispute are drawn completely comically, as opposed to the other aliens which seem plausible and have some depth to their characters. It completely ruins the mood.
Here's to hoping the creators get their shit together and get on with the real story they want to tell, instead of trying to be funny, and failing miserably.
UPDATE: vols 2-4 were on sale, so i picked them up, but re-read vol1 first, and seemed to like it a lot more the second time.

Typical western with a sci-fi setting. The new to a backwater mining town sheriff is a single mom with a secret that didn't get a minute after stepping off the train before needing to start in. I liked it enough to add the next to my TBR.

This was okay but I didn't get much from it, it didn't bring much new to the table, and didn't hook me enough to read beyond this volume.
