I loved the first 2/3s of the book. I felt like it off the rails in the final act which made me hate the ending. I felt like most of the third act could’ve cut and it wouldn’t have made a difference to the overall message of the story.

This is filled with insecurities about nature, God, science, and our place in the world, with a running theme of craving freedom and the desire to exist naturally. My heart shattered for the "monster." The "wretch" is so well-drawn and powerfully portrayed that he forms the emotional core of the entire story. He is among the finest creations literature has to offer. The "non-explanation" for Victor's process in creating the monster is a stroke of genius; Mary Shelley knew we would see through any scientific explanation, so she wisely omitted it. Additionally, Mary Shelley’s writing was beautiful to read, adding depth and elegance to the profound themes she explored.

A reread for spooktober!

I actually listened to this on audible and I highly, highly recommend the edition narrated by Dan Stevens.

This book was even better as a reread, full of complexity and sympathy.
