Great book--very detailed, knowledgeable without being preachy, and an EXCELLENT glossary and in-text explanations of Kreyol words and phrases.
Despite this being an introduction, Mambo Chita Tann delves into so much intricate history that it really feels like a master class. Of course, in Haitian Voodoo, many secrets of the practice are forbidden from public knowledge (and understandably so) and its practitioners are sworn to an oath, so there is plenty that we the reader don't get as well, but perhaps that is one of the beauties of Haitian Voodoo; its secrecy, still mostly free from the confines of colonialist consumption.
This was an excellent read, and I'm glad I got around to reading it. The history of Haiti is intrinsically interwoven with the history of Haitian Voodoo; the histories are together, and it is necessary to understand that, reading this book.
I highly recommend this book.

An amazing and fun read. The author gives a basic history of Haiti, goes over all the basic aspects of Haitian Vodou and then ties it all together in the last few chapters. The only down side to this is that at time it can seem repetitive but all that really does is ensure you damn well know the subject through and through by books end. Definitely a must read and please don't skip the intro, it provides some much needed information.
Very informative book on Haitian Voodoo. I really liked the section on the history of Haiti.

If you are interested in knowing more about Vodou, this book is a great start. It covers the history of Haiti, shows how that history as transform their culture, and gives you enough information to have a more accurate idea of what it is. It discusses the misconceptions and that negative reputation Vodou has, and also points out some of the differences between New Orleans' Voodoo and South American Hoodoo/root work. If you are looking for rituals and ceremories to replicate, it isn't here. This book allows you a peek into a closed practice and how to be respectful of it from someone that took the time to learn and grow in that community.
I would recommend to anyone that wants to learn about the subject respectfully.

This is such a beautiful book about a beautiful culture and religion. Mambo Chita Tann does an amazing job giving the historical context of Haitian culture and history along with the facts about Vodou itself. The author did a spectacular job of dismissing common misconceptions about Haitian Vodou that are rampant in American culture. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about this tradition.
putting vodoun in a historical and cultural context is the most apparent strength of this book. but then, the writer is an academic, and it shows clearly in her style and the concepts she chooses to discuss. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get an idea just what Haitian vodoun is as well as to those interested in the history of vodoun, Haiti, and the relation between these two.
Good basic book on Haitian Vodou by a working Mambo. Great introduction to the misunderstood religion of Vodou.
A very well written and enjoyable insight into the history of Haiti and it's religious culture.
