I finished The Toll feeling disappointed and sad. Not just because of how things ended, but because this book didn't feel like the same series I fell in love with. [b:Scythe|28954189|Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1)|Neal Shusterman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456172676l/28954189._SY75_.jpg|49179216] was sharp, compelling, and unique. [b:Thunderhead|33555224|Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe, #2)|Neal Shusterman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1505658534l/33555224._SY75_.jpg|54332060] built on that momentum in a satisfying way. But The Toll? It felt like a complete derailment.
Like many dystopian trilogies ( Divergent, Maze Runner, etc.), the third book spiraled so far from its original premise that it became nearly unrecognizable. The focus shifted away from the characters I cared about (Citra and Rowan) and instead gave too much space to side characters I didn't connect with at all.
Jeri, for instance, felt like a mouthpiece for Schusterman's gender politics more than an actual character. Greyson was flat and dull; I was never invested in his story. Scythe Goddard went from a layered villain to a cartoonishly psychotic one, seemingly reworked just to serve as a political metaphor. And the potential for a meaningful redemption arc with Scythe Rand? Completely wasted.
The pacing was another problem. This book was long. Not just in page count, but also in how drawn-out and exhausting it felt. The story was bogged down with philosophical tangents and filler chapters from characters I didn't care about, which made the whole reading experience a chore. I found the religious themes especially odd and hard to connect with. They felt more like a distraction than a meaningful addition to the worldbuilding.
If there's one thing I can say I appreciated, it's the Thunderhead as a character. It was such an interesting concept and that storyline (although tied to Greyson tightly) was intriguing. And I'll admit, the ending for Citra and Rowan was better than i feared.
Is The Toll better than the endings of [b:The Death Cure|7864437|The Death Cure (The Maze Runner, #3)|James Dashner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1303997647l/7864437._SY75_.jpg|11022464] or [b:Allegiant|18710190|Allegiant (Divergent, #3)|Veronica Roth|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1395582745l/18710190._SY75_.jpg|15524549]? Yeah. But that's not saying much.

Spoiler
I was relieved they ended up together, but the lack of a real reunion scene was a major letdown. After three books, they deserved so much more.Is The Toll better than the endings of [b:The Death Cure|7864437|The Death Cure (The Maze Runner, #3)|James Dashner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1303997647l/7864437._SY75_.jpg|11022464] or [b:Allegiant|18710190|Allegiant (Divergent, #3)|Veronica Roth|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1395582745l/18710190._SY75_.jpg|15524549]? Despite the pacing issues at the beginning, I enjoyed this book more than most people. That said, I still feel inclined to give it a lower rating because I’m dissatisfied with the way certain character arcs wrapped up.
My main issue is with Rowan. I would’ve loved to see more action from him as he navigates using vigilante justice as a means to carry out his values. In Scythe, he read as way more intrinsically justice-minded than Citra. Citra’s goodness grew with guidance, while Rowan’s was inherent and prevented him from going to the dark side. They were such interesting foils for each other to start, but while Citra continued to grow throughout the series (more so in Thunderhead than The Toll), Rowan was physically unable to have a similar arc because he spends the majority of the trilogy in captivity. His motivation being reduced to “I love Citra I can’t be without her </3” is so hollow compared to who he was at the beginning, and I already never bought their romance anyway lmfao.
It was still a fun read since I care so much about this world, and the plot twists really kept me hooked. But overall, I think the series started extremely strong and got weaker as it continued.
