This was a new to me author and I’m torn on how I feel about this book. There were times that I enjoyed it but others thought it was a bit slow. Some plot points worked for me and others I struggled with overlooking. The story and plot was enjoyable but I didn’t connect with the characters or their romance. I was interested in it to finish it all the way through and am curious enough about the rest of Oxford Set to read the rest of this series. There are three open door encounters plus a fade to black.

I gather that this is the author’s debut novel, in the historical romance genre at least, and in my opinion never was the saying “a good beginning bodes well” more right than in this case. Ava Bond is really a very promising and talented writer! The landscape descriptions are astonishing without being boring or lengthy, the hero and the heroine are well characterized and their love is passionate, romantic and compelling. Richard has made a mistake, but he’s been paying for it every day of his life. While trying to find his lost daughter, he meets the woman who’s taking care of her, Prudence, and kidnaps them both! But Prudence, who is supposed to be a meek country girl, the daughter of a Vicar of a small village, hides an adventurous heart… Her character is really a treat: she’s sweet, brave, resourceful and endearing. But Richard is a match for her: he’s honorable, good and kind. For once (it doesn’t happen very often in historical romance!) both characters are very likeable from the very start.
Furthermore, this is the first book of a series and I think there’s a lot of potential here. I’ve already seen a couple of side characters whose stories might be enjoyable to read…
