The primary complaint I’ve had about later books in this series is that there is so much time spent catching the reader up with every detail of the series thus far. Some certainly more guilty than others, in that regard.
Here, due to the hook that is our core conceit, we are able to mostly eschew that - and the story is much better off without October narrating the implications of each uncle’s brother’s husband’s Cu Sidhe best friend’s sordid past.
Catching the little bits yourself feels more rewarding, certainly.
The story and pace do live up to the long-term realization of a pre-series outline taken shape, but I suppose I need to read the companion piece to see how I feel about it in its entirety.
It doesn’t feel that there are many other guns above the mantel to fire…

This was hard to read at first, due to the fact that everyone was living in an alternate -and terrible - reality. But it was a fun read and a great addition to the series.
More tybalt please. There was so much opportunity for good angst and no rewards?!!!!
How this series continues to get better after, what, 17 books? is a mystery to me, but it does. This one is IMO the best yet, in ways that are impossible to usefully review in a non spoilery way. It has the usual mix of action packed plot, Faerie politics, and great character and interpersonal development, including a whole load of insights into things that have happened before.
5/5 stars: McGuire's October Daye series had been a long time favorite and this latest installment doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's a gut punch but if you've read this series you know McGuire's never been afraid to serve those up. McGuire's world of the Fae is fantastically well-written and thoroughly filled out and includes some of the best cast of characters I've ever read. They're infinitely complex yet incredibly likable; you will grow to love and hate them in turns. Also included is a short story, Candles and Starlight, featuring Raysel's POV during the events of Sleep No More. I love how McGuire uses the shorts to expand the world-building and flesh out the secondary characters of the series. This is the seventeenth book in the series and due to the nature of the story might be a good entry point for a new reader. But I would suggest starting from the beginning with [b:Rosemary and Rue|6294549|Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1)|Seanan McGuire|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1406866868l/6294549._SY75_.jpg|6478937], book one.

Wowzers! I've been up and down on the October Daye series but this was a STRONG up. I devoured it, and was engaged the whole way through.
2.5 stars rounded up because I'm having a not so great day and this was passable.
I really liked the overall plot, but the writing is what lost it for me. The pacing is just so busted. It starts off fine, but then everything starts to move at warp speed, then slow down, and then the ending is so fast -- blink and you miss the entire end battle.
I see no end in sight for these, but don't enjoy them enough to hold my breath for the next one. I'll try and remember to check in on the series in a few years if I'm bored enough.

I love this series so much. This one made me itchy waiting to see how it unfolded.
I am now so invested in Toby and her found family that this book made me cry!
