The story was pretty good but repeatedly hearing Toby's recitation of the way of things got on my nerves. 2nd half was better, by then the girl was learning how to be herself

no toby dont let everyone boss you around

Seventeen books in and I’m still as much of a fan of October Daye as ever. [b:Sleep No More|45434033|Sleep No More (October Daye, #17)|Seanan McGuire|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1684819187l/45434033._SY75_.jpg|70185794] is a creative and nuanced exploration of willful ignorance and privilege, It’s also an entertaining thought experiment with fresh takes on beloved characters. And [a:Seanan McGuire|2860219|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1245623198p2/2860219.jpg] sure can PLOT.

It wasn't quite what I expected. I didn't like the version of Toby wherein she accepted being considered as a second class citizen because she is a changeling. Only parts that I enjoyed was August's character development and Raysel's redemption story (novella). The interactions between Toby and Tybalt were quite few. The showdown between Toby and Titania was a bit of a letdown. I'm not sure if I want to read the next novel which features Tybalt's POV.

I always enjoy a Seanan McGuire book, but this was a bit of a letdown. In the previous book we were dealing with the bombshell reveal of Oberon, October and Tybalt had finally gotten married, and Titania had been revealed as, essentially, a serial killer. Frustratingly, everyone managed to lose track of her after Oberon stripped her powers and in this book, she's unleashed her revenge: remaking faerie history the way it "should" have gone. As a result, October is trapped in her mother Amandine's tower, tending to her sister August's every whim and treasuring the scraps of affection Simon is allowed to show her when Amandine isn't around. October spends most of this book still under Titania's spell, and totally unrecognizable. She's come along way from her "I'm just a magically challenged changeling and terrible mom" days but this October is even worse than she was in book one. Thankfully her allies provide the needed spark and momentum to get through this book. I'm a bit disappointed to learn that the next volume is just the same sequence of events from Tybalt's POV. The books only cover a four month time period so there's only so much that could have happened. Still, he and October are separated for most of this book so I hope we spend more time on how Titania's spell affected the people outside of Amandine's tower.

Three stars and a waffle

I received this eARC from Netgalley.com and am providing an unbiased review.

This is the 17th book in the October Daye series, and again, I'm just loving this series. I had thought after the last book, that we may have reached the end of line as far as this story could go, but again I am surprised. I enjoyed this look at how things could have been for October if things had been different growing up. I wonder how difficult some of the writing may have been, to take this well-established character, and write of them as a complete opposite of them self, yet, still being driven to be one's self, though hidden behind 'magic'. Truly a well-written tale, and I hope, hope, hope to see more in this series. I'll add I also enjoyed the novella at the end of the eARC, about a couple other supporting characters viewpoints of events at about the same time of the story.

I continue to love this series. Can't wait for the next!
