One of the book’s twists humbled me—I congratulated myself on picking up on the foreshadowing and was pleased when I saw I was right.

I was not right.

The writer masterfully subverted my expectations and I fully enjoyed this book—though there were parts that went over my head because magic systems and contemporary authors don’t always mix.

"Fairest" was a magical adventure that took me along, because it was a story about an ugly duckling that never turned into a swan. She never flew away or ever had a good cry about her misfortune. She wasn't afraid to take risks and she didn't let people hurt her. Her strength made her succeed in perusing her dreams.

This was a super fast, fun, and quick retelling with a really important message. Unfortunately the writing style was a bit cumbersome for me to read and while I appreciated how the main character was an underrepresented body type I found her character to be pretty flat. Overall I enjoyed fairest and I would recommend it for retelling lovers but it wasn't my favorite thing I've ever read.

Entertaining and a quick read. The author still does a great job twisting fairy tales into new stories, but it didn't live up to Ella Enchanted. I understand the importance of singing to the story, but the song lyrics made it harder to get through.

I really prefer Ella Enchanted, and I don't think it was just an age thing . . . this just seemed much weaker -- an emptier structure, with less charming detail...
medium-paced

I have loved this book for a very long time. Gail Carson Levine is a top-notch fairytale re-teller, and Fairest only highlights that expertise. There is a lot of Snow White in this book, but there is also so much more, with a vivid setting, characters, and plot that keeps the old story feeling new. The connection to Ella Enchanted is fun, but both books stand by themselves, so don't let one or the other stop you from reading.

My one complaint about Fairest is that I can't see htun. Also, I can't illuse.
