I like Anthony Horowitz much more when he does a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes than when he does a teenage James Bond. I think (but am not certain) that I would have said the same thing when I was a teenage boy myself.

LOVE Alex Rider. All of them.

I definitely read this one again more for the nostalgia than for anything else, and I was surprised by how much it held up for me in that regard. I actually found myself enjoying the story, I think because I obviously knew a lot of the plot going in so it didn’t come as a massive surprise to me.

Obviously it’s a little cheesy, it’s a book about a teenage spy it’s gonna be cheesy. But it’s an enjoyable sense of cheese, and it does show how well Horowitz is able to write his characters out.

I remember the movie that came out for this book and if I’m right, Ewan McGregor played the uncle and that was the major draw for me.

So yeah.

Fun read, fast paced, over the top danger.
I prefer the c.h.e.r.u.b. series: better characters, more realistic, still fast paced and wild.

I think the plot could be tighter, but it was a generally fun spy thriller middle school read.

I picked this up because I'd heard the series was hugely popular in England, and that there was a movie coming out.

The book was pretty much what I expected. I liked Alex and was impressed with his skills, but it wasn't the most exciting thing I've ever read. I'd read the others, and I'd still recommend them to kids who like action.

Its good for what it is. Its a 11+ book so cant expect much but the nostalgia factor is insane.
