This is like a german Downtown Abbey minus the gentry. For the most part I did enjoy the story, though the "dark secret" was not as dark as they wanted one to believe. At first I adored this book but throughout it let me down. I did enjoy the writing at first as well, partly because of the old speech. But somehow the writing was very passive and very telling and not so much showing. Lots of stuff happened off-page, which made it really info-dumpy and a bit unbelievable. The characters were great, though I am convinced that Downtown Abbey actually had a bit part in this.
The love story was sadly not done very well. I expected more in that. Still an enjoyable and fast read despite the 700 pages.

Ik zou zeggen 3,5 ster. Lekker makkelijk weg te lezen met meerder verhaallijnen. Het is bij vlagen wel wat zoetsappig en voorspelbaar maar alsnog de moeite waard om te lezen.
