This was a second go around with this book, doing the audio rather than reading. I got bogged down in the middle but I blame my current life state and what is going on, rather than the book. I love Edmond, and reading about all his adventures. The themes of forgiveness, vengeance, mercy, and happiness all weave together to create a perfect story.

4 stars is a stretch, but at the end of the day I did enjoy this book! The ending and wrapping up of the Count's machinations was excellent. The prose was really good for a book so old! Easy to digest. I enjoyed how some chapters would start off rather confusing (why am I here? who is this POV?) and then make sense by the end, which provided little morsels of satisfaction almost like little short stories. I expected more swashbuckling and nautical elements which never arrived - they really should stop putting ships on the covers of these editions! Man was it long, though. I should probably have given it a 3, but bumping to a 4 because I want to feel sophisticated, and there really wasn't anything I could point to in particular that was WRONG with it outside it's length.
