Pushed through the first hundred pages, then skimmed it hard. Take out the swearing and tone down the subject matter and you have a decent YA book, but either way its not for me.

There's some cool ideas here - combining clockwork and necromancy is just as cool here as it briefly was in Mark Lawrence's 'Broken Empire' - but I prefer to learn about magic and characters slowly rather than having powers and emotions fully described immediately by characters who constantly talk out loud to themselves about what's going on in their heads.

A sweet fantasy about friendships, sacrifices, duty and loss.
I loved the main characters though I wish each MC got equal time to take over the narration, and I did wish for more queer rep.
I did find parts of the plot very predictable, but I didn't mind as I was more interested in the how the characters interacted with each other.

I really enjoyed this book! It was an easy read, well paced and had me longing to read more stories set in this world when I had finished. I liked the characters, understood them and their whys and it kept me on my toes even when I was sure I knew what was going to happen next. It reignited the joy I had for reading this year that had lagged since summer. Definitely a reccomend for anyone looking for a standalone fantasy that will keep you coming back for more!

I went in craving a slowburn grimdark tale. What I ended up getting is a fast-paced nostalgia pill akin to the old fantasy of yore (think [a:Tamora Pierce|8596|Tamora Pierce|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1209044273p2/8596.jpg]). All in all, it's not a bad quick, light read, but also more YA than what I would've expected from a supposedly older cast of characters.
