First Sentence:
"My basic philosophy is simple: People are like ice cream"
Synopsis:
From the Publisher
We predict amazing success for this brand-new mystery series starring Psychic Abby Cooper
Abby Cooper is a P.I., psychic intuitive. But her insight failed her when she didn't foresee the death of one of her clients-or that the lead investigator for the case is the gorgeous blind date she just met. Now, with the police suspicious of her abilities and a killer on the loose, Abby's future looks more uncertain than ever.
My Thoughts:
I am pleasantly surprised with how this story was developed and how it ultimately ended.
I wasn't too sure how the whole premise would play itself out, it could have gone very bad. However, it was well written and well thought out and although I wasn't immediately drawn into the story the potential was strong.
As a reader I have been having trouble getting into new mystery series lately especially those of the "cozy" variety, and I wasn't sure if this would qualify. I am glad that it did not fall into that category for me. I would have missed out on a truly unique reading adventure.
Characterization:
I loved the initial meeting between Abby and Dutch, although I knew from the get go that he was going to be a cop. It just wouldn't have worked otherwise.
Laurie did an amazing job of making Abby appear authentic and real, maybe that comes from her own job as a professional psychic as well. But, Abby was three dimensional and strong and definitely felt real. I jumped on the chance to read all the other books in this series as well as Laurie's new ghost hunter series.
I can't wait to see what happens with Abby and Dutch because they really just felt like a good match.

This is the first in the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie and what a great cozy mystery it is!
Abby Cooper calls herself an Psychic Intuitive, having the gift of seeing images of problems in peoples lives and helping them understand what it means. When she fails a client, who ends up being murdered, Abby feels she owes it to her client to help the police find her killer and bring them to justice.
When Abby starts getting a little too close to learning the killer's identity, soon she becomes his next target. Despite the efforts of the handsome detective on the case to try and keep Abby safe, she finds herself being pulled deeper into the investigation and closer to the killer than she planned.

I love this book. Abby Cooper is cute and quirky and psychic. She walks a fine line between following her intuition and following common sense, but still allows her pride to affect her decisions. There’s something refreshing about the way she’s written as a character. She’s almost realistic, which was not what I expected in a quirky mystery novel. I’d love to read the rest of Abby’s series. Laurie writes in such a precise and engaging manner that it’s hard to believe this is a first novel. She had another series out, and I believe I own the first novel somewhere in my book stash, and I’m probably going to read that series as well. This was my “light reading” choice after a series of dark and psychological books, and I think I hide well. Found a new favorite, guys!
There was a slow start, but the story really picked up by the middle of the book. It’s a fast read with a quirky main character. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Abby starts out great! She's believable, not just as a woman, but as a psychic. The processes that Abby uses are described throughout the book along with why she uses them. It lends the story more gravitas than I thought it would. Her interactions with her friends, clients and family are relate-able. But when it came to her interactions with handsome Detective Dutch Rivers...wow does she blow it. Abby cuts him off before he gets chances to explain or apologize; she takes it out on him when he steps back for professional reasons (not sure what weird ethics/conflict of interest regulations they broke but I'm sure that figured in to his decisions); despite his help, she doesn't thank him. And while I know attraction makes people irrational, this was a bit too far.
The story and setting were well done. I felt like the clues were revealed in appropriate ways, and at a pace that kept you interested. They were easily spotted but hard to put together, just like real life. Unlike some cozy mystery detectives, Abby doesn't come across as overly nosy or butting in where she shouldn't. Her rationales are believable and sympathetic. This was book one - I'll definitely be on the lookout for the rest!

I had read "Killer Insight" and loved it, so started looking for the rest of the books in the series. This one is the first one. I really enjoyed it as well. Great series.

I decided to read this book on a recommendation of a fellow Library thing member. I saw part of their review and felt it was a book I could enjoy. Glad to say it held true and I did quite enjoy the book.
I love mysteries and cozy mysteries are ones that I love to read on nice long weekends. This was a perfect choice.
Abby Cooper is a Psychic or an Intuitive as she likes to call herself. I found the beginning of the book slow moving since you were introduced to her, her friends and other acquaintances. Once you meet all the characters the story really starts moving and gets very interesting.
Abby is a nice woman who is afraid of what others think about her Psychic ability. Her sister Cat is very successful and is like a mother to Abby. Abby and Cat are very close. Abby is also single and meets a man in this opening book. His name is Dutch.
I loved this book because you couldn't figure out right away who committed the murders. When you finally do find out it is a surprise.
