Lit: A Memoir

Mary Karr

3.93 AVERAGE

After hearing the name Mary Karr echoed in many panels, classes, and conversations—I finally picked up this memoir. A great representation of what memoirs can do, how they move, and breathe. Karr writes with enviable scrutiny and honesty.

It took me a few chapters to get into this book, but once in I loved it.

Love the writing and insights in this book. xo

I hated this book most of the way through but she won me over at the end. I think it may have hit too close to home but her unwavering honesty was refreshing when other memoirs set out to impress.

I loved this book to pieces. Mary Karr is a great storyteller and she has a masterful ability to give voice to a massive tangled pile of complex and difficult feelings. I saw myself all over this book, even though I am not a, let's say,"narrowly focused," substance abuser. I have an addictive personality and struggle with a lot of the same inclinations - in particular the desire to manaically consume and perpetuate something/someone/some behavior that I know is destructive for me. I am drawn to addiciton memoirs for that reason and this is a really solid title from that genre. I also really enjoyed her spiritual and religious journey - it's logical, it's understandable, it doesn't seem forced and saccharine and she doesn't try to ram her beliefs down her readers throats. *Highly recommended*
