Rare that a sequel is actually better than the first book, but I think this one was! Both were great reads, but this sequel felt tighter. 4.5 stars. Swashbuckling treasure hunting fun.

My main complaint with this book is that it romanticizes toxic masculinity and unhealthy relationship dynamics. It's also just SUCH bad writing and the characters are so uninteresting, it was truly difficult to read at times and made me cringe. I really wanted to like this series because it's a YA fantasy adventure with a strong female lead (what's not to like?), but honestly I only read the second book because the first one ends with such a ridiculous cliff hanger that I am convinced these two books were a single novel that an editor spilt in two by putting their finger somewhere around the middle of the transcript. My advice is, don't waste your time.
