my very first audiobook ARC! and what a fun one.

let me start by giving kudos to this author for having a main character who is a best interest attorney/guardian ad litem. it was so refreshing to have an FMC with a career not typically seen in books. i love a good detective novel, but it gets tiresome reading the same few professions in books. this was a much appreciated change of pace that i really enjoyed!

stella has a unique opportunity to be appointed as rose’s BIA, a young girl suffering from traumatic mutism after witnessing the possible murder of her nanny. we see some *questionable* behavior from rose as well as each member of her family, leaving us guessing how tina really fell from the third story window. everyone in the barclay family is a suspect, had motive, and are actively working to deceive stella. throughout the chaos of rose’s story, we also learn about stella’s complicated past and the childhood trauma she endured of losing both her father and mother at a young age. she is reconciling that loss parallel to the barclays’ unfolding, leaving the reader with all the sensations of unease and dying to know the answers.

i have to say that this was such a well-rounded ending. after the crescendo of finding out the “whodunit” aspect of the book, we were able to stay with stella for multiple chapters and have all areas of her life wrapped up with a cute little bow! it was so satisfying. i kept think the book was over and then we would get another chapter that gave us even more. my main critique of this was that she forgave WAY TOO EASILY! if we wanted true horror, there would have been more sinister implications in that major deception.

many thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and the author for sending this ARC!

I devoured this book! There’s something so creepy about children sometimes, especially Rose, so I really wanted to get to the bottom of the situation alongside Stella. The book was full of misdirections and I loved that about it. I couldn’t trust my own thoughts and opinions and by the time I got to the end I realized that I had been manipulated, just like Stella! What an excellent use of the characters to create a certain perspective/narrative.

I alternated between the book and audiobook and fully enjoyed the experience that the audiobook narrator provided. I found myself up half the night listening and unable to turn it off!

As I absolutely loved Gone Tonight by the same author I was keen to read this book asap.

This is the second book I’ve read about child protective services, this one is court appointed best interest attorney Stella who is investigating where Rose the appointed child’s interest lies after her Nanny died in suspicious circumstances. The previous book concentrated more on the court procedure (Between the Lies Louise Tickle for anyone curious)  This one is more investigative than court based.

Of course there are plenty of secrets, lies and twists it wouldn’t be a psych thriller without. It’s got a good pace. It kept me entertained, there’s a couple of dodgy decisions (to be expected). There’s  characters to love, hate and be suspicious of, sometimes all three at once.

I didn’t love it as much as Gone Tonight, but I enjoyed it.

✦ My Thoughts
Sarah Pekkanen was one of my first favorite thriller authors. Am I her biggest fan? Probably😍 I have read everything she's written (both solo + co-authored) & her 2023 title Gone Tonight was one of my top reads last year. Excited is an understatement when I got this new release!

Eerie, unsettling, & so so good. I couldn't put this book down. I DEVOURED IT.

With short, binge worthy chapters that kept me on the edge of my seat, palpable suspense & writing that gets you completely invested- this is the recipe for a perfect page turner.

I love how this book was like piecing together a big puzzle - you just have to keep reading to see how the big picture comes together.

House of Glass is a 10/10! I am only sad that we have to wait until August for it to hit the shelves! Add this to your TBR RIGHT NOW! This is a must read for thriller lovers - trust me, you aren’t gonna want to miss this one!

thanks to @netgalley, @macmillan.audio , @stmartinspress, + @sarahpekkanen for the opportunity to read this arc ◡̈
