Why was this so cute??? I would have liked to see more after they got together though...the ending felt kind of abrupt.
#famous follows Rachel and Kyle after she posts a seemingly ordinary photo of him online that gains national attention. In this sweet and memorable remake of the "Alex for Target" craze that had preteens obsessed with a boy they barely knew who bagged groceries, #famous is a shockingly heartwarming and true story about what it's like to be "famous."
I went into this thinking it would just be a sweet contemporary romance. Not knowing much about Alex for Target (only the main gist) I can't account for how much is real and how much is fictional. But this story definitely leaves a mark. #famous is a story about bullying (cyber and real-life), what it means to discover who you really are, and the pros and cons of putting yourself out there.
As someone who didn't have a #awesome time in high school, I really connected emotionally with the main character Rachel. And I loved how different she was and how the book played up to how aggressive the "trolls" on the internet can be, and how others can think that the same thing you were made fun of for can be an amazing quality.
Although I really enjoyed this book, there were several things that bothered me. At first, some of the typical "mean girls" seemed to have more dimension than your average YA novel. But as the story progressed they turned back into your typical mean girl clique. I also found it difficult at first to get into Kyle's use of colons (and there are a lot).
Overall, I think this will be an empowering book for younger female readers, with limited graphic content and little to any cussing.

This was cute. The bullying in the beginning was too much for me honestly, but I loved that Rachel didn't let it affect her, she had a cry, and she moved on. Kyle was cute, a little tactless but cute. I really liked the friends in this, Ollie and Mo. Mo, in the beginning was pushing Rachel into the scheme too much, then as the story went along, you see her being the wise one. Same for Ollie. Ollie should have been in the story more.
Anyway, 3.5 stars from me!

Fluffy YA. There's a bit of cyberbullying, a lot of misunderstandings, a predictable outcome - but a fun, easy read.
Cute concept, likable characters... though near the end I was cringing in pain at the drama.
This was a cute book. However, the drama that happened all the way until the very end nearly did me in.
Also, reading this right after, "How to break up with your phone" was a bit timely. I kept thinking: this is why kids should not have smart phones. When are they studying? Why do they have all their notifications turned on? [Scenario in book regarding social media] is why so many teenagers are so depressed.

I really wasn't sure how to feel about the characters of this book for most of it. It was something I really had to dig into to really enjoy it. About halfway through I finally started to enjoy it. A few times I considered putting this down for good and DNFing it but I'm glad I finished it. Rachel was definitely my favorite character though I wanted to punch her 90% of the time. I wanted her to have self-confidence so badly! Overall, a cute contemporary read :)

DNF at 67% because it got so darn painful for me to keep rolling my eyes.
Cute premise, but taken past the extent of realistic. Very two-dimensional characters, and the token black best friend could have been fleshed out a hell of a lot more than just being feisty. I'm betting this ends in love and I'm not buying it.

I received a copy via Edelweiss for an honest review
This was one of those reads that you enjoy because it's quick and has cute moments, but it's not something that will stick in your mind when you've moved on to your next read.
There were moments where the writing felt really young. Like, the phrase "oof" was mentioned a lot from Alex, oops, I mean "Kyle"'s perspective and his unnecessary addiction to colons made everything feel: contrived. It all felt like additional unnecessary add-ons so the writing would feel different from Rachel's perspective.
I gave this a two star because of the over-the-top mean girl drama--that wasn't truly resolved?--the constant manipulation, and the over-the-top slut-shaming of a girl for taking a simple pic of a dude.
I read this quickly because I won't lie, it was a super quick read. But all of the characters felt so...predictable and bland and a little cliche. There just lacked some form of substance. I won't lie--I legit blanked on the names of the characters. Oops.
When I finished reading this book, I first felt joy that I had finally finished and then I felt a collection of mixed emotions. I want to say I enjoyed this book and sometimes, I really did. But then I'd read Rachel's pushover tendencies, and Kyle's bland way of always being the nice dude and I just...feel, well, meh about the whole thing.
Also, I have to say that Kyle asking who Julia Roberts was in one of the chapters was so heartbreakingly sad.
2 stars because it had enough of a pull to keep me, but it wasn't the most memorable read.
Happy reading!
