This was a NOVEL novel. The amount of research done to pull something like this off is deeply impressive. There were times when I was amazed that this was fiction because it was so detailed and felt so much like Cal was real and this was his autobiography rather than a fictional story. Only giving it 4 stars because it wasn't entirely my cup of tea, and although it's a craft 5-star, it just didn't necessarily change my life.

The best book I've read in a good while.

The prose is just excellent, poetic and clever, and while there were definitely some really contrived constructions, the large majority of his writing just sort of washed over you. I didn't really realize how beautiful it was except in reflection, because the words were perfectly chosen. Not distractingly artistic, or jarringly academic, but smooth and precise.

The story was excellent as well, and the format was also great.

This is a pretty fluffy review, but I have no negative feelings about the book.

Definitely recommended.

This book was a book club book once upon a time. I never read it at that time, though...It was hard to get into and I was confused. I re-started reading it a couple of times.

HOWEVER, I most recently tried it again this month, and I LOVE IT! I think his writing style was hard for me to pick up at first, but I'm on vacation, and being able to clear my head really helps me concentrate (go figure).

So, now I'm flying through it and I'll probably give it more than the 3 stars I have it rated as now...To Be Continued...
