LOVED this one though it did take a while to get into the family history. Appreciated the social history of Detroit, and did sympathize with the character's trials.

Middlesex deals with issues of biological sex, gender and sexuality in an intelligent and engaging manner. As a PhD student of gender studies I was pleasantly surprised by this book's thought-provoking musings on the nature of hermaphroditism and by extension the binary interpretation of sex and gender and its failings. And above all a story that really drew me in, remaining an emotional page turner all the way to the final page. A joy.
