A Greek epic to rival the classics.
Cal Stephanides was born twice: first as Callie, a baby girl, then as a teenage boy. Eugenides brilliantly spins this tale from both Cal’s perspective and the perspective of the gene that decided (or didn’t) Cal’s sex and gender. As much as an intersex youth is the central theme of the story, so is the family’s immigrant story. From twisted family secrets that go back generations to Cal’s present-day hurdles, struggles, and discoveries; from the Greek isles under Turkish siege to the motorized golden hour of Detroit, the Stephanides family will love, fight, and feed their way into your heart.
“We're all made up of many parts, other halves. Not just me.”

This is my favorite book of all time. The way it's written is so immersive.
dark tense medium-paced

It's a good story, but I'm a little confussed as to why Eugenides picked such a socially charged topic if he has so little to say on the matter. Does anyone ever close this book and think anything other than "And...?"

This is the story of a Greek hermaphrodite - not as gross as it sounds. I felt real empathy for Callie.

I kept hearing Scout Finch saying, "You damn morphodite."

I managed to enjoy it and also not enjoy it at the same time.
