As a huge Mark Stevens fan, I'd been looking forward to this one, which is an intriguing twist on the typical serial killer plotline. I loved the Denver references in this page-turner. Highly recommended!

Ugh

I see a lot of reviews saying that they had to DNF this book because of the writing style. That was my struggle. The plot was interesting, but the execution sucked. The writing was weird. The storyline took too long to come together. The author mentioned the characters’ race in strange and unnecessary ways. It seemed like he fetishized Black people. I kept pushing because the suspense was good. I wanted to see if and how Harry would get caught. I liked getting the story from his perspective even though he was creepy AF. The plot twist at the end was bizarre, but it made me want to know just a little bit more. This could’ve been a good thriller if the writing had been better.

In my opinion a bit anticlimactic the cat and mouse was intriguing but felt lack luster at the end leading to Harry’s capture. The ambiguous end of oh he’s always been a good liar feels cheap to me especially with other than two times hearing the story about the mom dying in a crash and abusive father the book doesn’t set any precedent of Harry lying, maybe about “kidnapping” Wyatt but still. The reveal of a perfect normal country loving family also felt very quick and out of nowhere then had very little explanation as to why the author decided to use that as an ending.
