It took me a while to get through this book. I loved the first two, but this one just seemed to drag and I couldn’t get into it. It finally got good around the 80% mark and it had a good ending, but the rest of the book just felt meh.

Falling in love with Dot’s books! Love the intricate way a story is weaved with a mix of suspense and investigation. Great series!

Did not love this one.
I was definitely intrigued by the different stories and thought that it would put a “fun” twist to the book to see how it all unfolded. I’ll give acknowledgment to the author that having to come up with all of these different cases and situations must have been heart breaking, they were difficult to read and honestly had me thinking I wanted to become a foster parent, the poor children.

Now with that being said, this one just lacked that.. umph? I had a really hard time connecting with Mercedes, and I missed the different POVs that the previous books had.

I hated all the stupid extra relationships in her life. It just frustrated me to the max. And also, I know very little (more like none) spanish so all the spanish blurbs and comments were a little defeating because I didn’t really feel like I could fully understand and commit to the book. Had there been a translation or somehow hinted at what it meant it probably would have been more appropriate, in my opinion.

Maybe there wasn’t enough Garden Girls? The reveal of the murderer was also just like.. oh? Okay? And then all of a sudden it was every episode of Criminal Minds and it was over… i don’t know…

I will of course be reading the Vanishing Season, but this one just didn’t do it for me and I’m honestly a little sad about it.

I literally read this book over seven consecutive hours and my brain is fried. Simultaneously warm and fuzzy, creepy as heck, dark and also very hopeful??? I don't even know how to explain it but it made me want to scream and cry at the same time while also smiling and continuing to read so you know it's a good book.
Honorable mention to the author's amazing integration of diversity into the plot and the characters without making it token or forced...it's very impressive considering the current political climate in novels considering POC/LGBT characters that are just there to prove that the book isn't heteronormative or xenophobic. I applaud her choices when it comes to this, and pretty much everything else, in the book.

10/10 would recommend.

//I read it again and cried again sooo you KNOW this is a good book
