Slow in the first half, but builds up to an excellent endgame. Great character depth and emotional realism.

Have you ever wanted to live inside the deluded mind of a pathetic serial rapist? Probably not, but that exactly what this book is, and it's actually pretty good at what it is.

Extremely Unpleasant. 3.4 stars.

Ruth Rendell writes from the view of the criminal and exposes the logic he uses when engaging with others and the world around him. If you think about it, it is disturbing how rational he sees himself and how affected others are. I would suggest focusing on the workings of his mind rather than simply reading her words. The effect is much more profound that way...

I really enjoyed this literary crime novel that followed the basic structure of the standard thriller, yet was from the "bad guy"'s perspective. Kind of a thriller, kind of a psychological study, a fun read all around. One of my favorite crime novels I've read in some time.

This is a book about a bad man. Rendell doesn't seem to think the reader should feel sorry for him; the book is more of a pyschological study (and perhaps a comment about correctional institutions).

Couldn't put it down though.

I am giving 3 stars to this book since there are too many rape scenes in this book.
