This book takes readers from the time before dinosaurs emerged, through their emergence, the times they were the dominant animals, and through their extinction (per the author, they mostly became extinct. He, and some others, believe there is a type of dinosaur alive today). He talks about the people who made important discoveries related to dinosaurs throughout the years and what led them to the field. The book has some elements of a memoir. The author talks about the path that led him to become a paleontologist. When he described some likely scenarios the dinosaurs lived, and died, through, I could picture them. I enjoyed the book. It was well written and imformative.

There was a lot of ‘cowboy scientist’ type stories in it, which isn’t to my taste, and the description of the actual dinosaurs included depictions of evolution as improving species instead of simply changing them over time, which bothered me.

I was interested in the science but, wow did the author use this book as an opportunity! Name dropping, glee in misogynistic jokes, multiple slurs against American Indians, First Nations, and people in European countries with "sinister" dark skin.
