Fall 2020 (October);

While not a deep fan of any of the musical interludes that took place in the book (and probably then not the music he produces on the normal), I was seriously and deeply enrapt by the stories between then, by the words and world I could so easily parallel to mine, to those I know, to those kids in my classroom's lives I heard so much about. I walked out of this book with my heart more full than when I walked in.

This isn't the typical narration of a written work, but a hybrid sort of musical memoir that is compelling and engrossing.

Made worse by being live. Cheering, crowd work, and a moment where Common calls for someone from the crowd to come up and dance with him were all detracting from this being an audiobook.

It's not entirely an audiobook though; it's poetry, a few stories, and hiphop that are really well paced. He has some clever lines and rhyming schemes, which I expected, but he also tries out different subgenres based on who the story is about or when it took place.

It would have been 4 stars if it were just recorded in a studio

I am listening to this on audio - highly recommended.

I love his voice he needs to do more audio books.

One negative for me is the rap music. I am not into hip hop but I like what he is saying.

Very interesting concept. Common goes through his experiences of life with lyrics and the written word. I’m not a huge fan of rap, in general, but I do enjoy his work; and so the concept was interesting to me. He would speak a little bit then follow it up with some rap and some background singers. Even when he was speaking it felt more like poetry over standard speaking and that was very enjoyable to me.

This was originally a live show and so was a little off putting once or twice; for example, he would invite someone on stage to dance, well that’s hard to get into when listening to; however, that was minor.

I really liked this. It was a solid 3.5, but I rounded up to 4, because the downsides were very minor.

That was an absolute delight to listen to. Spoken word and hip-hop in one performance. Common’s voice is soothing and his music is relevant. I hope he does more performances like this.

This was interesting. There was a section on ... seduction... I could have done without, but the combination of hip-hop, spoken word poetry, and confessional monologue was fascinating.

Not bad, just definitely not a style I personal enjoy.
