Ok, I understand that she makes her living from Gruesome, and Barbara Rosenblatt is an award-winning reader, but I still think this book was too far drawn out for me and the audio got me annoyed since there was no progress sometimes. Not the best audio book to listen to while driving... made me tired, and the diction was a bit repetitive after a while. The story line left something to be questioned in terms of Suspension of disbelief, as well, which gave the story a small leg to stand on. Or maybe I just didn't like it.

I enjoyed the story, but this is definitely not my favourite Kathy Reichs book. So many details were extremely far-fetched and I actually picked up at least one error. I found it extremely frustrating how Tempe acts foolishly, beyond her qualifications, and unprofessionally.

I personally know a forensic anthropologist. His involvement in a crime investigation is typically this: assist police in searching for remains (if they have not already been recovered), remove/excavate remains, collect evidence, analyze, and submit a report. No chasing after suspects, interrogating, or investigating leads. Sure, I understand the books need to have some excitement and suspense, but it seems like they're getting more and more out of hand. I find non-fiction forensic anthropology books fascinating (eg. Doug Owsley, Doug Ubelaker, Clyde Snow, etc.) without all the drama, just the facts. However I have a background in forensic science and physical anthropology so I may not speak for the genaral reader.

Another good book in the Temperance Brennan series. I feel as though this book was a little less suspenseful and action-packed as the books before it in the series. I believe that the reason for this is because this book deals with very heavy issues ( Trigger Warnings: missing children, murdered children, pedophilia, child abuse) and thus gives the book a melancholic, hopeless feeling.

In addition to the heaviness of the case, Temperance's personal life is also in a gloomy state and this affects her working partnership with Ryan (the Booth character if you have seen the show). The reader also gets a glimpse into Temperance's childhood and the hardships she faced that shaped her into the person she is.

The book provided a lot of context and set up for future books I feel. I look forward to continuing the series.

This was my first Temperance Brennan book. I realize it is the tenth in the series, but felt I could probably just jump in and catch up, since I have seen the first seven seasons of the TV show. The first thing I noticed is that it's nothing like the show. Sure, Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist, and she works with an FBI agent, but that seems to be where the similarities end. Their personalities, family life, world views and even intelligence and social skills widely differ. That being said, it was still an enjoyable read, with a convoluted mystery to be solved and several skeletons/bodies to identify. I didn't care for the turn that the story took into child pornography, but Tempe's search for her long lost friend Evangeline had me intrigued. I found it interesting that her sister, Harry was so involved in the case as well. The ending (without giving much of anything away) was anticlimactic, to say the least. There was all this build up, then not much happened (because we'd already figured most everything out) and then the book abruptly ended without giving us anything in the way of closure or satisfaction. This novel is fine as a stand-alone, but I will probably go back to the beginning of the series and start with Deja Dead. I don't see that I've missed much of anything.

love this series!!

This is the first and probably only book I will read by Kathy Reichs. I was excited to try it out because I absolutely adore the show Bones, one of my all time favorite series. This book however did not hold up to the character of Temperance Brennan. In the show she is highly intelligent and has a lot of character. The book Temperance falls flat in comparison.
adventurous challenging dark emotional mysterious tense fast-paced

Getting a bit formulaic by now...

I found this book to be slow moving but towards the end, the twist and turns were thrown at you!

Not one of my favorites. But I will continue to read this series; there is a lot to like.
